Ford Mustang Names.

Where did all the names for the Ford Mustang come from, The Boss, Cobra, Shelby, Four Eyed Fox, Mustang II, Mach 1, California Special, all of these names are a Ford Mustang. All of them designate a different type of Ford Mustang; they usually have either been named by the public, or by the manufacturer due to some sort of upgrade or engine name.

The Four Eyed Fox Ford Mustang seems to be a name designated for the headlight configuration, as well as the type of engine. The earliest models known to be labeled with the Fox label is the 1979 Mustang, and there are still Mustang's until 1993 with what they consider the Fox body style

The Boss comes from one of the original Ford Mustang, 1969 the Boss engine, a 429 cid engine for NASCAR, they also installed a boss 302 Mustang engine. These late 69 models were popular with drag racing and streetcar enthusiasts, you'll again see the Boss in the very early 90s with a campaign for the Mustang concerning "The Boss is Back" that Ford produced with the new 90's Ford Mustang.

The Mustang II came from the gas crunch of the mid-70s and was considered an economical performance sports car, but it had none of that heavy horsepower of the earlier models. It was well known that it's handling seemed to be better than the heavier models, and became a popular Mustang in its own right.

The Mach 1 was first seen in Ford's Mustang lineup in a 1969, with a Boss 429 and a deluxe interior, this fast back version of the Ford Mustang is still a popular collectors dream. There are many aftermarket technical upgrades, getting rid of the problems of smog equipment, restricted intake manifolds and the beginning of the 70s gas crunch emissions controls.

The Cobra Ford Mustang was first seen in the 67 -- 68 years because of a Cobra Jet engine that officially rated at 335 hp but often times, in reality produced in excess of 400 hp, this name again was seen attached to the Ford Mustang in 71- 73 with a Super Cobra Jet engine. As with all 70s models, many emissions and restrictions were put on engine, so it never outperformed the original Cobra. The Cobra Mustang GT again was seen in the 94 and is still in production today. The '94 Cobra may have been the first aluminum head engines, and the new millennium Cobra is one of the first Ford Mustang models to received independent rear suspension.

They Shelby Mustang is a relatively new name coming from S-197 platform Mustang, it has significant upgrades usually also known as a GT 500 Mustang as well as a California Special, all of these names for the Ford Mustang have come from either an upgraded engine, pony package, or possible body style, well-known names in the American public's eye, and all known as the Ford Mustang.
